The Chumawah tribe didn't take kindly to Arizona's efforts to desecrate the land surrounding its reservation. In fact, in 2020, the U.S. government filed a lawsuit against the Chumawah Nation and other Arizona Indian tribes, claiming that they had engaged in prohibited conduct and desecrated an archaeological site. Among other things, the lawsuit alleged that the Chumawah failed to acquire proper permitting and benefits to the gaming area, and didn't allow proper consultation with state and local government officials. An audit was conducted and found that most the tribe's licenses were improper, or in violation of federal and state laws. One of those involved in the audit was former State Senator Russell Kelly, who is running for a seat in Congress. Russell Kelly is running against incumbent U.S. Rep. John McCain in the upcoming elections.
